Lander to Uganda 2013

Last July Richard Lander School, Falmouth School, St Ives School and Truro College went on a trip to Uganda, Africa, to stay and work with many schools there. Prior to the trip, we and the rest of the students going on the trip organized multiple fundraising events, including bag packing, a sponsored bike ride, cake sales, and held events such as a comedy evening at Richard Lander presented by Johnny Cowling, and a dance for the students. Overall, we raised over £20,000, the highest amount raised since the trip began 5 years ago.

Whilst in Uganda, we stayed in the village of Luweero, and worked on refurbishing Luweero Girls Primary School. We visited their classes, and also painted their dorms and purchased new beds and mosquito nets for the students.
A few days later we left and crossed the equator down to the village of Bukomansimbi, where we stayed in the dorm rooms at HOY’s college. During our 2 week stay there we had many wonderful experiences including teaching some of the younger students’ classes, participating in football matches against them, and giving out essential food and supplies to locals in the surrounding village. We were visited numerous times by the choir and joined in their dancing and singing. We also met the teachers and students of the local primary school St Judes, and improved their dorms and other school facilities as we did at Luweero.

To conclude our trip we spent 3 days at Mweya Safari Lodge to complete our unforgettable African experience.
We created many incredible memories and have made wonderful lifelong friends from both the other English institutions and the schools in Uganda.
