Year 7 Overview

In Year 7, students undertake a range of projects designed to familiarise them with new designing techniques and to develop their practical workshop skills. A full Health and Safety induction to the workshops is also undertaken at the start of the year.

Projects include:

Sealife Pewter Jewellery

This very popular project allows students to research, design and thoroughly plan their jewellery work before undertaking a wide range of making activities. The project is further extended with a focused practical task of making a wooden box for their jewellery. The addition of two Laser Cutters to the department has created further opportunity for students to enhance the design and accuracy of their practical outcomes in this area.

Jewellery box

The jewellery project is extended with a focused practical task of making a wooden box for the jewellery. Students have the opportunity to line the box with coloured felt to add visual appeal and protect the delicate jewellery’s surfaces.

Watch Blister Packaging

In this project students are given a cheap digital watch and asked to help promote it through its packaging. Students develop a range of analysis skills to help understand the type of information and graphics needed to promote the watch and then set about using this information to generate their own promotional packaging. Students then learn about batch and mass production techniques through the use of vacuum forming.

Graphics Module

Students also undertake a basic graphics module in Year 7 which aims to give them a range of essential designing skills including; technical drawing, colour rendering, typography and designing for a target audience.

Year Seven Food

In food technology we have aimed to consider the demands of the D.T. programmes of study, healthy eating, the motivation of students and the development of their practical skills. Students make a range of products that focus on different aspects of healthy eating, including sugar and starch, fibre, fats and fruit and vegetables. We start off with a range of simple dishes to develop student skills and confidence.

All students in year seven complete a project that is assessed against the National Curriculum levels. students work from a design brief that asks them to design and make a 5-aday pizza.

Year Seven Textiles

In year seven students develop their practical skills and the use of the sewing Machine, with a simple task. They then complete an assessed project, where they work from a design brief that asks them to design and make a puppet suitable for a child their age.
