Resistant Materials Overview

In Year 10 students will undertake a wide variety of very carefully structured projects aimed at developing designing ability and key manufacturing skills with all resistant materials. Each project will focus on a particular material area and/or range of tools and workshop equipment that will be needed as part of coursework in year 11. CAD/CAM and its role in DT is discussed and incorporated where ever possible in all project work.

In Year 11, students are asked to devise a problem that faces them in everyday life - be it in the home, participating in sports and hobbies or elsewhere. They must then develop a resistant materials based solution that will form their coursework for the Autumn and Spring term. Design innovation and high quality production techniques are encouraged throughout and students are expected to produce a supporting design portfolio to compliment the final practical piece.

The range of high quality products produced in recent years has been so outstanding that the DT department now holds an annual coursework exhibition in school to show off the talents of our students. We have also been entering students work into regional and national competitions and have enjoyed great success at both levels.

After Easter in Year 11, students are given the exam board's preparation sheet for the final summer exam and then begin a series of carefully structured revision lessons designed to re-cap on all the work covered in Years 10 and 11.
