Languages
Organisation
The first foreign language, French, is started in Year 7. This language is usually continued until the end of Year 11. Some students are given the opportunity to add German to their learning programme in Year 8.
Aims
Developing a level of competence needed to make contact with French/German speakers in everyday situations.
Gaining an insight into and respect for the people and culture of other countries, particularly those where the target language is spoken.
Fostering an awareness of the ways in which foreign languages may differ or resemble the system in English and developing the general skills needed for foreign language learning.
Methods
Emphasis is placed on practical communication and each student is encouraged to reach his/her full potential in terms of accuracy, complexity of language and grammatical awareness.
Assessment
The student´s progress is measured at regular intervals. This may be done through tests, the completion of an assignment or simply classwork and homework.
Homework
Homework forms a necessary part of the course and is set to revise, extend or use independently what has been done in class. It may involve speaking, reading, writing, learning, research or preparation.
