On Thursday 17th December 2015, Christmas arrived with our annual Service of Nine Lessons and Carols, held at Truro Cathedral.
Mrs Whomersley, Director of Music, Mr Wilkins and the school musical ensembles, supported by the Creative Arts team, brought us an uplifting evening of music to really get us into the festive mood.
The evening started with Palestrina Choir singing ‘O Come, O Come Emmanuel’ to a Cathedral lit only by candles held by year 7 and 8 students who processed down the central aisle. Isaac Feldman, from year 7, then sang a solo of ‘Once in Royal David’s City’ in a beautiful clear voice. The congregation were treated to performances from Changing Voices, Wilbye, Tallis, Taverner and Dowland choirs accompanied by Terpsichore, Richard Lander’s medieval woodwind orchestra, and the school Recorder Ensemble. The music ranged from Medieval to a Caribbean Carol and included 2 wonderful compositions from Mr Russell Pascoe, performed by Palestrina and Changing Voices. Between performances, Richard Lander School’s best orators, coached by Miss Taylor, read 9 lessons, with clear and expressive delivery, and the congregation joined the choirs in song. Canon Alan Bashforth brought the evening to a close with a blessing.
Thank you so much to the Chapter of Truro Cathedral and Mrs Whomersley, Miss Taylor and the Creative Arts department for all your hard work. For many of us, this is the highlight of our school year.
