Curriculum: Service of Nine Lessons and Carols - Christmas Message

Here is short film of our annual Christmas celebration held in Truro Cathedral. Featuring the wonderful voices of the Richard Lander School choirs, this was an occasion not to be missed!

Service of Nine Lessons and Carols at Truro Cathedral

On Monday 2rd December, Christmas arrived with our annual Service of Nine Lessons and Carols, held in Truro Cathedral.

Mr Pascoe, Mrs Whomersley and the school choirs, supported by the Creative Arts team, brought us an uplifting evening of music to really get us into the festive mood.

The evening started with Palestrina   Choir singing ‘O Come, O Come Emmanual’ to a cathedral lit only by candles held by year 7 students as they processed down the central aisle. Chris Price, from year 7, then sang  a very moving solo of ‘Once in Royal David’s City’ as we all reached for our tissues! Clearly this was going to be a tough act to follow but somehow, the Changing Voices, Taverner and Dowland choirs managed it, delighting the congregation with ‘Angels from the realms of glory’ ‘We three Kings’  ‘Gaudete’ ‘The Holy Child’ ‘The Candle Song’ ‘Rise up shepherds’ ’Midwinter’ and the finale ’Hallelujah Chorus.’  The music ranged from Medieval to traditional pieces which had been arranged by Mr Pascoe for the occasion.

Another wonderful aspect of the evening was that the congregation also got to raise their voices in song and, unlike at so many occasions, everyone joined in and sang out the well known carols such as ‘O Come, All Ye Faithful.’ and ‘O Little Town of Bethlehem.’

Miss Taylor selected and coached readers from all year groups and all showed themselves to be marvellous orators, with clear and expressive delivery of the 9 lessons.

Canon Peter Walker, brought the evening to a close with a blessing.
Thank you so much to Mr Pascoe and Mrs Whomersley for your hard work and to Truro Cathedral for supporting this occasion. For many of us, this is the highlight of our school year.

Steve Mulcahy, Headteacher, said:
Each year our Cathedral Carol Service brings our school into the period of advent in such a spiritual and joyous way.  Our choirs sang beautifully and their voices resonated so evocatively in the cathedral setting.  Moments like these truly epitomise the values of spirit of community which are so important to our school.”

“Well done to all students who took part in the service and the many staff who helped support it.”

We were also delighted that some of the parents and grandparents who attended, emailed in such lovely appreciative feedback.
