On Friday 28th September, a 30 strong RLS surf squad took on the rest of the Peninsula Partnership in what proved to be a challenging day in the variable surf and gusty wind at Gwithian beach. At stake was not only the honour of being placed in the final, but also qualification for Cornwall School Games later on in the academic year.
As is often the way, Lander dominated the early rounds with over half of our squad making it into the quarter finals and then 11 students going through to the semi finals. In the girls section, Lily Burton was proving to be a force to be reckoned with, along with Arthur Randell and Louis Ingram in the year 7-9 boys, Max Hudson in the year 10-11 boys and the ever reliable bodyboarder Marcus Reed, who were all undefeated going into their respective finals. Unfortunately the conditions deteriorated as the day went on, but our finalists refused to be thwarted and put in several fine performances demonstrating both their experience and skill level.
As the crowds gathered for the presentation, our students were eager to hear the results, collect goodie bags for those who were placed, pose for the official photographer (our very own Ruby Drake!) and receive notification of qualifiers for CSGs.
7-11 Girls: 2nd Lily Burton, 4th Beth Ireland
7-9 Boys: 1st Louis Ingram and 2nd Arthur Randell
10-11 Boys: 1st Max Hudson scoring a very creditable 13.4 and 4th Leon Reed
7-11 Bodyboarding: 1st and defending his title successfully once again, the fantastically talented Marcus Reed scoring 15.0!
All of the finalists have qualified for CSGs along with Finlay Lucas who finished 5th in the 7-9 boys. Best of luck to you all.
Well done to all who represented RLS so well on the day; you were a credit to yourselves and to our school.Thank you also to Ruby for being such a diligent and capable photographer and to the parents who supported the event.
