Curriculum: It's and its

It’s and its

These two little words often cause a lot of confusion.  How do you know which one to use?

It’s is a contraction of it is or it has.  It has (or it’s) been a hot day today.

Its is a possessive pronoun meaning belonging to it.  The dog was known for its constant barking.

A way to test it

If you can replace it[']s in your sentence with it is or it has, then your word is it’s; otherwise, your word is its.
