Parents: Year 6 Open Evening 2013

Open Evening Provides Explosions, Puddings and Puzzles for Year 5 & 6 Students

Once again our annual Open Evening proved to be a great success, with hundreds of our current students on hand to give guided tours and run exciting activities for potential new Richard Lander recruits!

Parents, carers and year 5 & 6 students packed into school last Thursday for demonstrations, displays and challenges such as PH testing, fridge magnet making, CSI Lander, creating and describing your own fizzy drink, lighting a methane explosion, insulting a family member in Shakespearian and tasting a pudding from a different era.

The environmentally minded made toilet roll bird feeder with Garden Club whilst IT wizards had the opportunity to try out Raspberry Pi applications, create games with Scratch or build robots with Lego Mindstorms.

For those who preferred a more relaxing activity DT Food and Catering students provided cream teas and the Languages department opened a French Café  for the evening.  Excess calories could then be burned off in the HRF room or Sports Hall.

The Greenpower team were on hand to answer questions about RLR1 and to show the public the 2 new cars in the fleet which are works in progress.

Students visiting the Creative Arts department had the opportunity to contribute to the Journeys wall, produce a mixed media Cornish landscape, listen to the school choirs and resident rock band, watch our GCSE Drama students prepare their examination pieces  and participate in a workshop in the Dance Studio.

The Mathematics department offered a wide range of activities from code breaking to curve stitching and Celtic designs as Mrs Vincent and Mrs Heyward were very keen for new students to see the beauty in Maths!

With prizes galore on offer, a great time was had by all and we look forward to welcoming the year 6 students back for RLS induction days in the summer term.
