Richard Lander School holds Olympic Ball to raise money for Ex-Student Paralympic Athlete

On Thursday 28th June, Richard Lander held an Olympic themed ball for its year 9 and year 10 students at St Agnes Football Club. The event was hosted by Mandy Kimmins and Mr A Durant. Among other costumes, the students arrived dressed in white to represent the gods of Olympia, red, white and blue in support of team GB and as 118 athletes.

The students were treated to energetic welcome by Hayle Storm Samba Band to begin the event, they then enjoyed a fantastic performance by fellow students Tom Redfern and Ben Pridmore, followed by a set from talented local artist, Tom James from Falmouth. The evening ended with the tunes of DJ Mark, by which time every student was on the dance floor! Throughout the evening, the was a huge chocolate fountain available, along with inflatable human sized table football and Pugil Fighting.

The event raised over 500 for ex-student, Melissa Reid, who came to national attention last summer when she was named in the Great Britain Para-Triathlon Affiliation Squad following finishing second in the World Champions held in Hyde Park, London. Melissa was delighted with her selection having only applied for the triathlon having had a job application turned down, giving her only 3 week to prepare for the event, which included finding a guide and getting to grips with riding a tandem! Melissa was born with a sight defect and is blind in one eye and partially sighted in the other. Melissas ambition is to compete in 2016 Paralympic games in Rio De Janiero.  The 500 raised at the ball will go towards her travel costs and career development to make this possible. Melissa will be visiting Richard Lander soon to collect her cheque.

The ball very nearly didnt happen, following the cancellation of the annual St Agnes Publicans' Ball, and it was only down to the determination of Mandy Kimmins, and the generosity of the St Agnes Publicans who continued to support the hire of the marquee for Richard Lander School and other charity events, along with the support of Over The Top Marquees and Richard Greenslade that made it possible.

Mandy Kimmins from St Agnes Football Club, who hosted the event, said: The 5th Richard Lander Summer Ball, was a wonderful event with fantastic bands and fantastically behaved children. It is brilliant to have such a good working relationship with Richard Lander.

Mr Ali Durant (PE Teacher) said: For me this is one of the most exciting days of the school calendar, I was delighted with both the behaviour and enthusiasm of our students, and extremely grateful to the performers for their fantastic entertainment and Mandy for all her hard work.

Facebook was awash with student comments following the event many naming it as the best night of my life!
