On Thursday 10th December, Christmas arrived for Richard Lander School families, with our annual Service of Nine Lessons and Carols, held at Truro Cathedral.
Miss Jones, Director of Music, Miss Foxon and Mr Gibbons, along with the school musical ensembles and choirs, and their musical instrument teachers, brought us a truly uplifting evening of music to really get us into the festive mood.
The evening started with a selection of our most talented voices singing ‘O Come, O Come Emmanuel’ to a Cathedral lit only by candles, held by year 7 and 8 students who processed down the central aisle. Pheobe Collishaw, from year 7, sang the first verse of ‘Once in Royal David’s City’ as an acapella solo; her wonderful clear voice ringing out in the Cathedral; before the congregation joined in on the second verse.
We were treated to performances from the Whole School Voices & Carol Orchestra of ‘Carol of the Bells’ ‘Walking in the Air’ ‘Angels in the Bleak Midwinter’ and ‘Gaudete’, whilst the Brass Ensemble, led by Mr Greaves, played Handel’s ‘Hallelujah’. Senior Choir sang ‘Suantraí ár Slánaitheora’ by Sheán Og O Tuama and A. Adams’ ‘O Holy Night’ and our youngest singers performed ‘Suogân’ by S. Hope, ‘Seasons of Peace’ by M. Patterson and ‘Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas’ by R.Blane. Changing Voices gave us a really lovely rendition of ‘White Christmas’ and Richard Lander School’s best public speakers delivered the disciple’s lessons in between the music, with the congregation joining in to sing well known carols.
The evening finished with our unaccompanied selected voices singing Hodie Christus Natus Est, and the congregation left Truro Cathedral feeling warm in our hearts and festive in spirit!
