Year 10 Team Mathematics Competition:
2013 Regional Heat
This week Richard Lander School hosted the Truro regional heat of this exciting competition which tests the mathematical, communication and teamwork skills of students in year 10.
The competition is organised on a regional basis by the Further Mathematic Support Programme with over 50 events taking place across England in February and March. Schools participating included; Truro School, Truro High, Redruth, Mullion, Mounts Bay, Humphry Davy and Newquay Tretherras. Several schools brought 2 teams, including ourselves as hosts. Each team of 4 students was treated to two and a half hours of challenging maths problems.
The atmosphere in the hall was tense and competition fierce as 14 teams battled for first place. After lots of head scratching and deliberation, the Richard Lander team of Callum Golden, Harrison Moore, David Dixon and Harry Searle were pronounced winners with Mullion and Truro School as runners up.
The winning Richard Lander team will travel to Exeter in May for the final. Well done to all the students who took part and thank you to their teachers for supporting the competition.
Callum Golden said,
‘I still can’t believe we won. It was tough!’
Richard Lander Maths teacher Paula Cockle said,
‘It was excellent to see so many young people excited about Maths! All the teams were amazing - brilliant ambassadors for both their schools and for Mathematics!
