On Friday 20th June the Science Department took a group of Year 9 students to Exeter University, Penryn Campus. The students completed a range of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) tasks based around simulated volcanic eruption.
After speaking to a volcanologist, Dr Kate Smith, the students developed their knowledge of lava flow, dome tilts and earthquakes through a circus of activities. Using this information, small teams had to plan an evacuation for one village around a volcano. They had a budget to stick to and they collaborated with other villages to ensure success. To complete the day, the STEM team took the students outside to create an explosion with liquid nitrogen and water to model lava. The students thoroughly enjoyed the whole day.
