On Saturday 23rd January, Newquay Sports Centre hosted the annual schools cross country championship. The conditions were challenging to say the least as the course resembled a quagmire in places, but at least it stayed dry. Our Year 7s were first to race seeing Teo Palfreyman-Gaze coming 9th (with the possibility of being selected to run at the regionals) and Saskia Adie 17th – well done to both of them.
The Year 10/11 boys were next and faced an energy zapping 5.6km course with mud now coming up to the shins in places. Abu Gupta’s intentions were made clear from the start as he worked hard to stay with the leaders and remained there for the whole of the race. He came home in 5th place and it looks like he will be selected for the South West championship in a few week’s time. The rest of his team mates supported him well with Cadan Polkinghorne, Jacob Milligan and Max Everard all coming in the top 20 which resulted in them collectively winning the team event; congratulations boys!
The final race of the day saw Sam Gapp take on a very strong year 8/9 field of competitors. He stuck to the task in hand and came a superb 5th overall; hopefully he too will be selected for the regional finals.
Thank-you to all of our competitors; you were as always a real credit to the school and, if selected, I wish you good luck for the next round.
