The UK Mathematics Trust runs a series of maths challenges nationwide for students to compete in. Richard Lander entered students in years 9, 10 and 11 to compete in the Intermediate Challenge. The one hour long multiple choice paper tests mathematical thinking, problem solving and mental agility. I am delighted to report that more students have received awards than last year: 4 Gold, 12 Silver and 31 Bronze. Year 11 student, Tom, not only achieved a Gold certificate but was also the Best In School. Finn was the Best in Year 10 with a Silver certificate while Harry was Best in Year 9 also with a Silver certificate.
Amazingly, 4 students have qualified for the next stage of the National competition on Thursday 17th March 2016. Tom will be joined by Eloise and Cathy to sit the Pink Kangaroo while Harry has been invited to answer the Grey Kangaroo (an hour long paper which contains 25 multiple choice questions.)
Tom “It has been my dream to achieve Gold in the Intermediate Maths Challenge. I’ve been training hard these last few months and I feel that I am at the pinnacle of my mathematical career. Everything came together on the day and I’d like to give special thanks to my Maths teacher, Mrs Vincent, as well as to my mother and father. The gleaming gold certificate will hang proudly as the centrepiece to my bedroom.”
Cathy “I’m slightly shocked but excited about my result in the maths challenge. Whilst difficult, the paper was quite different to our GCSE questions so interesting to try.”
Eloise “It was a massive surprise to achieve the gold award this year, truly the only thing it can be put down to is the phenomenon that is our new maths teacher, Mr Weeks, whose teaching methods are truly stellar and I’m sure shall lead our whole class to top results in our GCSE’s”
Harry “I owe it all to my genius teacher Mr Collinge. Without him I couldn’t have achieved such a high score. I am looking forward to the next round, where my training schedule will be much more intense.”
