After the success achieved in the indoor football tournament earlier in the year hopes were very high for a successful first football season. Despite the appalling weather this year, Year 7 football did not disappoint, in fact many excellent results were also achieved by what was effectively the 'B' and 'C' teams highlighting a considerable strength in depth.
The County Cup run began with a home game against Falmouth School with the RLS showing their quality with a comfortable victory. This meant a trip to Truro School, who were well organised and competitive but three first half goals brought about a RLS 3 nil victory. Local rivals Penair were next and they were despatched very convincingly, setting up a trip to Penryn for the County semi final.
Penryn are always very tough opponents and two very evenly matched teams couldn't be split even after extra-time so the 1-1 score line meant penalties would decide the game. Nerves showed with Richard Lander missing 2 only for Penryn to miss 3 enabling the Lander team to progress into the County final.
Wadebridge football club was the venue and East Cornwall Champions Saltash the opponents on a very pleasant early summer evening. The Saltash team were big and aggressive and took an early lead. Despite this Richard Lander were creating chances and it was no surprise when an equaliser came just before the half time break. In the 2nd half the game came to life, with the tackles flying in but the Lander boys giving as good as they got. Against the run of play Saltash regained the lead and for the next 15 minutes RLS dominated but the goal didn't come. In the very closing stages of the game a long throw into a dangerous area lead to a goalmouth scramble and the equalising goal was there, much to the delight of the team and the large contingent of RLS supporters. This was no more than the team deserved, they never gave up and played some excellent attacking football.
In extra time there only ever looked like being one winner with Saltash being unable to cope with the superior fitness levels and the positive approach RLS had now adopted. A really early goal and a screamer late on from Tom Dolan gave Richard Lander a deserved 4-2 victory. Congratulations must go to the whole team, a fantastic end to a great season! Roll on next year!
