Richard Lander students celebrate winning three business awards

Students from Richard Lander School are celebrating today after a successful launch of their new product and winning three business awards at the Young Enterprise Christmas Trade Fair this weekend (7 December).

The team of 14 and 15 year olds behind Rocky & Co. are taking part in the national Young Enterprise programme and joined 17 other teams from across Cornwall to showcase their new product, a creative kit for children – Rock Monsters, at the fair on Lemon Quay, Truro.

As well as almost selling out of all its stock Rocky & Co. were presented three awards from the Young Enterprise judges and Mayor of Truro for: Most Innovative Product, Best Marketing and Promotion and Best Press Release.

Commenting on the awards, Lucie Robinson, YE Manager, Cornwall said:
“This was the biggest Young Enterprise trade fair we have ever had in Cornwall and there were 18 companies fighting for awards. Rocky & Co. were one of the stronger teams on the day. It was clearly evident that the group of Year 10 students had been working exceptionally hard on their product and all the judges were very impressed. I am looking forward to seeing how the company has developed at the spring trade fair.”

The students came up with the idea of a creative craft kit designed for younger children as an escape from electronics and a chance to have fun being creative. This is something that the Rocky & Co team decided would make their product unique from modern games and entertainment.

Tamsin Tripp, a sales representative at Rocky & Co. who helped at the fair, said:
“Everyone worked really hard to prepare for the fair – getting our marketing materials and social media up and running and preparing kits to sell on the day.
“It was a great success – even the Mayor liked our product! We almost sold out of packs and we had a lot of positive feedback from the judges and the public which was a big help in terms of market research and thinking about what challenges we may have to face.”

The team, who have been mentored and advised by Philippa Hill from Wild Card PR and Dan Sampson from The Royal Bank of Scotland, are now focusing on the next stage of the Cornwall Young Enterprise challenge ahead of the County Innovation Awards in April. They hope to expand the product to make it more commercially available and will be attending several more events in the lead up to Christmas including the Richard Lander Christmas Trade Fair on Friday, 12 December from 5pm.
