Health & Social Care
In Health & Social Care students study the areas of growth and development that contribute to a whole person, including physical, intellectual, emotional and social. They reflect on physical, social and economic factors that part of everyone’s life, such as relationships with family, and consider the way they impact on each area of growth and development.
The Award gives students the opportunity to develop sector-specific knowledge and skills in a practical learning environment. They develop skills in analysing information and communicating for a specific purpose, which will support progression to Level 2 or 3 vocational or academic qualifications. The main focus is on four areas of equal importance:
- Developing key skills that prove aptitude in health and social care such as interpreting data to assess an individual’s health
- Effective ways of working in health and social care, such as designing a plan to improve an individual’s health and wellbeing
- Understanding the attitudes that are considered most important in health and social care, including the care values that are vitally important in the sector
- Gaining knowledge that underpins effective use of skills, process and attitudes in the sector such as human growth and development, health and social care services, and factors affecting people’s health and wellbeing
The course structure comprises of three components, students are assessed in four internal assessments and a final synoptic external assessment. Across Year 10 and Year 11 students will cover the following material:
Component 1 – Human Lifespan Development
In this component, students learn how people grow and develop over the course of their life, from infancy to old age, this includes physical, intellectual, emotional and social development, and the different factors that may affect them.
Component 2 – Health and Social Care Services and Values
This component gives students an understanding of health and social care services and they develop skills in applying care values that are common across the sector (some of which are transferable to other sectors that involve interactions with clients or customers).
Component 3 – Health and Wellbeing
In this component, students look at the factors that can have a positive or negative influence on a person’s health and wellbeing. They learn to interpret physiological and lifestyle indicators, and what they mean for someone’s state of health. Students use this information to design an appropriate plan for improving someone’s health and wellbeing and explore the difficulties an individual may face when trying to make these changes.
