Physical Education & Sport

Physical Education has a significant role in shaping young people's physical, personal and social development.  Of course it is about sporting excellence and achievement.  But it is also about self-esteem, personal target setting and making the right choices about healthy living.

Physical Education and School Sport play a key role in the personal development of young people. While participating students develop cooperation, resilience, confidence, honesty and integrity. They display independence, self-management and leadership. These skills will aid our young people in other areas of their lives both at school and beyond, shaping their futures.

In addition to PE lessons there is also comprehensive extra-curricular sport provision, during the lunch hour, after school and through representing the school in a range of competitive individual and team sports.

Richard Lander School is committed to maintaining the offer of PE lessons and extra-curricular sporting opportunities throughout a student’s time at school, allowing each student to adopt a healthy and active lifestyle with opportunities to make informed choices about their future involvement in physical activity and sport.

Our sporting facilities are extensive and of the highest quality. This offers our students the chance to perform to the best of their ability and reach their potential. Our facilities are excellently maintained and our specialist facilities include a sports hall, gymnasium, health related fitness suite, all weather pitch, tennis courts and playing fields.

PE Stage Key 3

Across Key Stage 3 students will complete a large number of units of work per year in a wide breadth of activities, giving them the opportunity to begin considering areas of interest for the future. The focus of study will be:

  • Using tactics and strategies in games activities
  • Developing techniques to improve performance in physical activities.
  • Working as part of a team to solve problems.
  • Analysing performances and demonstrating improvements.
  • Participation in competitive sport outside of school.

Students will be placed into ability groups to ensure they are working at an appropriate level, both for safety reasons and to aid their enjoyment and development. Throughout Years 7,8 & 9, lessons and activities will be progressive, enabling students to be continually challenged in order to develop their level of skill, fitness and understanding.

Within units, students will be encouraged to work both independently and as part of a team. They will look to improve their levels of confidence in all activities. They will also begin to tackle more advanced skills as well as develop tactical and compositional awareness. As well as this, students will learn to offer constructive feedback about observed performance.

Through a range of experiences within PE, students will learn how to be effective in competitive, creative and challenging sporting situations.

PE Stage Key 4

At Key Stage 4, all students will take part in weekly PE lessons within their core entitlement. During core PE time, they will begin to specialise in their preferred activities. They will build on previous work whilst also taking on different roles within a sporting context.  They will be encouraged to become self-managers, working enthusiastically in either competitive or recreational environments; targeting improvements in levels of skill and fitness.

Students will become increasingly aware aware of the benefits of exercise and will have a clear plan with regard to managing their future involvement in sports related activities.

In addition to core entitlement for all students, many will choose to take an accredited course in PE such as the Sports Leaders and OCR Sports Studies courses at Key Stage 4. Students can choose OCR Sports Studies as an option or take the Sports Leaders course as an extracurricular activity. Both of these courses allow students to pursue a deep rooted interest in PE/sport, based upon practical performance and theoretical understanding, opening up PE and Sport related career opportunities.
