Our School: Governors

Message from Mr Rob Loosemore - Chair of Governors

On behalf of the governing body, welcome to Richard Lander School.

I feel privileged to have taken over the role of Chair of Governors at Richard Lander School having served on the governing body for nearly 20 years. My ongoing aim is to ensure that all students have the best opportunities to learn and gain life experiences that will help guide their futures.

I am sure that any visitor to the school will be impressed with the atmosphere and ethos of the school where student safety and learning are evident throughout.

The governors and staff are committed to ensuring that every student is challenged to success whatever their background or ability alongside ensuring their well-being as citizens is fully supported. The role of the governors is to provide strategic input and challenge to the Headteacher to ensure the school provides the best possible environment and opportunities for students and staff. It is an honour to be amongst a great team of governors and staff serving Richard Lander and wider community.

Richard Lander School Governing Body

The Governing Body has three core functions:

  • Ensuring clarity of Vision, ethos and strategic direction
  • Holding the Headteacher to account for the educational performance of the school and its students and the performance management of staff; and
  • Overseeing the financial performance of the school and making sure its money is well spent

Within our governing body we have 4 committees:

  • Personnel
  • Finance and General Purpose
  • Students and Curriculum
  • Policy

These committees report back to the main governing body at the end of each term.

Further guidance on being a governor is available on the Cornwall Council website at http://www.cornwall.gov.uk/education-and-learning/schools-and-colleges/governors/

Parent Governor Vacancy

In our school we have provision for 4 parent governors and there is currently 1 vacancy for which we are requesting nominations. No special qualifications are needed and the most important thing is to have a keen interest in the school and be prepared to play an active part in the governing body’s work. However, we would particularly welcome nominations from parents with a background in finance.

If you are a parent or carer of a student currently attending at Richard Lander and you would like to stand for election, please complete the nomination form below and return it by email to VSleeman@richardlander.cornwall.sch.uk by no later than NOON on Friday 13th November 2020. You may also include a short personal statement to support your nomination, which should be no longer than 250 words. Please ensure that you meet the qualifications and disqualifications criteria as set out in the document below, before applying. Self-nominations will be accepted, but if you are nominating another parent please seek their prior consent. Please note that nominations will only be accepted if they have been sent from the email address which the school has on record for you.
